I LOVE IT WHEN OLD FRIENDS NEED A NEW HOME.  It all started 10 years ago when I sold a home in Waldorf to a lovely military couple relocating to Andrews AFB for 3 years.  Washington DC area was going to be their final duty station before retiring.  So, they planned to stay in the area for only 3 years.   Once they were retired from the military, they decided to remain in Maryland.  They loved their home and both secured good jobs. 

LOOKING IN MARYLAND AND NORTHERN VIRGINIA.  They contacted me about a month ago with the goal of renting their home in Waldorf and buying something with more room.  The home they purchased in 1998 was a small Colonial style house, about 2252 square feet, with a one car garage and no basement.  Many homes in the St. Charles were built without basements, partly due to the high water table in the ara and partly due to the dominance of one builder who just didn't build with basements.  They're looking for about 2800 plus square feet with a 2 car garage, a large kitchen and Master bedroom and a basement. 

WE'VE TOURED HOMES IN 3 COUNTIES IN TWO STATES.  Three weeks ago, we toured homes in Woodbridge, Virginia, new and resale.  Two weeks ago, we toured resale homes in Waldorf.  Friday we toured homes in Leesburg, Virginia.  Saturday back to Waldorf to see foreclosures and short sales.  Today we toured a builder in Purcellville.  They very much favor Leesburg.  Not surprising since Leesburg is a wonderful, friendly convenient town with shopping of all types and an easy commute to their jobs, although the commute would take about an hour, that is acceptable.

On a sunny November afternoon in 2008, I thought The Raven was back. 

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door -
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

The bird was a local and smaller than a Raven, but it was, nontheless, strange and worthy of  Poe".

Throughout the morning, I kept hearing a "thump, thump".  However, since I was in the house by myself, I knew it was probably the wind.  Mmmm, no wind out there today.  The "thump" wasn't loud, but clear.

Then, a few minutes ago, out of the corner of my eye, passing my foyer, I saw something move by the front door.  Goodness, there's a bird trying to "thump" it's way into my home through the transom over the front door. 

I went to the garage to fetch my camera.  Fortunately, when I returned, the bird was still there, "thumping" away at the transom window, trying to get in.  From time to time, he would move to one of the windows in the sidelights.  "Peck, peck, thump, thump".   I believe I'll take a peek out the door before opening it from now on. 

Amazing.  I love living in the country.   I have birds knocking at my windows, Turkeys strolling across my lawn, Deer eating my tomoto plants, a fox that lives across the road, a Blue Heron that visits the moat in front of my home, cows that stroll along the road from time to time.  Never a dull moment.
