200 Year Old Fences Still Work in the Loudoun County Countryside.
You can learn a lot about an area just by looking at the fences in the country side. On a tour of
homes yesterday, I was detoured through the countryside from Aldie to Purcellville. A bridge was
out and that caused a detour of an extra 15 miles or so. I can thank the downed bridge for
taking me through an area of Northern Virginia that I hadn't visited for some time.
What struck me the most was the fences and how they frame the homes, the fields and the roads.
One thing that distinguishes Loudoun County and other areas of Western Northern Virginia is the
stone fences. They are very beautiful and some of them have been there for over a 150 years.
THESE BEAUTIFUL STONE FENCES LINE THE COUNTRYroads in Western Loudoun County offering a touch of history to drivers and residents.
Stone is found across the fields and meadows throughout Western Loudoun County. The source of the stone or rock was caused millions of years in this area which is right at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain Range.
Heat and the natural convulsions of the earth in areas of great force caused these rocks to form the surface of the land in many areas of Western Loudoun County.
Natural erosion put a layer of topsoil, forests, and natural growths, wildflowers and crops are there, but the rocks are always just a few inches below.
Stone is decorative, but 3-4 board wood fencing is generally used for horse properties.
Beautiful Split Rail fending is popular for cattle, horse, boundary fending. More rustic than the board fencing, home owners often like the look of this popular suburban fence style and installation is easy. The split rails are often kept in the natural state and weather naturally.
Fencing like the below are decorative part of landscaping.

Lenn...So many look on stonewalls and fences as mere decorative additions providing curb appeal!
Here in New hampshire they reflect history. Walking through a heavily wooded area and coming across a stone wall reminds of how heavily our State was once farmed! Stone walls are a reminder of how things were!
Thanks for a thought provoking post!
Tony.
I don't upload photos to Localism.
They dumped almost 400 photos that I had spend countless hours shooting and uploading. I get points by working my butt off writing and Localism articles. No photos.
No more.
Thanks for the comment and the thought, though. I appreciate it.
Joan. Many are decorative around here too. But, they are very much a part of the landscape.
Laurie. I think it's beautiful too. I find it very relaxing just driving through the undeveloped areas of Western Loudoun County.
Thanks for commenting folks.
Lenn - I do believe you are ingenous - who else could write such a great localiam about fences???
I was on Localism, looking at pictures. I thought about adding pictures in the neighborhhod section, then remembered you had said yours were deleted. I am not sure I understand the logic behind that. When consumers read about a particular area or neighborhood, they will click on view pictures of "neighborhood".
We all know they don't always take time to read each posts. Pictures draw them in....then they may read the entire post to find out more.
Lenn - you've got me SO EXCITED about visiting DC & Virginia in less than a month. I have family there to make a business trip a real treat! I've never met anyone else who knew where ROUND HILL and HAMILTON were in Virginia!! Now you have it on your maps... I LOVE THIS!!! I'm going to send this post to my cousin who atteded Loudon Valley High!!!
I remember these fences as we drove through the area....ALMOST THERE NOW...ALMOST THERE!!! It's so beautiful up there!!
Paula. I would add some of my "fences" to Localism, but I don't understand their standards. I believe that photos of fences and neighborhood homes are a lot more interesting than the local fast food place, but I'm not "the decider". Dumping my photos was a clear rebuff. I'm not going to "stake myself out" by posting any more photos. It's a shame. I shoot fabulous photos whereever I go.
Susie. Thanks for commenting. Loudoun Valley High School is the top ranked high school in the county and it draws families to the area.
We are going to get a new high school in Western Loudoun County, as soon as they can stop fighting over the location. I just read last week where Lovettsville is under consideration. What a wonderful benefit to our little communities that would be.
First: a new high school; then more home buyers, then more homes, then maybe, just maybe, we could get a GROCERY STORE.
Bob. Isn't that the truth. "If only they could talk".
